Posted on Sunair's Facebook page is the news that from the 1st of February 2016 the company will be operating flights out of North Shore Airport (Dairy Flat) to Hamilton, Tauranga and Rotorua. The flights will operate Monday to Friday with morning services departing North Shore at 7.45am and returning by 9.30am and in the afternoon services departing at 4.15pm and and returning by 6.00pm.
I think this is a good move by Sunair. I think it was unfortunate that North Shore Air didn't persevere. North Shore-Tauranga is a route that could really have worked but people have to have time to used to not using Auckland International, the higher prices and knowing about a convenient air service that avoids Auckland's rush hour traffic. On the Sunair have a history of operating on lean routes and making them work by operating more as an air taxi... we'll fly when there are passengers and drop them off at different airports to fill the plane. The new air service has all the hallmarks of this, with passengers being flown to Hamilton, Tauranga or Rotorua as demand dictates. My hope for Sunair is that they will build the demand.
