The longest domestic

Last evening (15 December 2019) I flew down on New Zealand's longest domestic flight, NZ699 from Auckland to Invercargill made possible by the cheap fares when the service started... Unfortunately the weather was lousy...

Off into the murk from Auckland's Runway 23

Yep - there's a lot of cloud out there

But up top there was sunshine

One of the South Island hydro lakes I think... anyone recognise it???

"New Ones" at Auckland

I really need to do some Auckland plane spotting over January... I had some time there yesterday afternoon and there were a number of "new ones" that I am quite ashamed it has taken me so long to get...

Off the Operating Certificate

Removed from Sounds Air's operating certificate is Cessna 525 Citation CJ3 ZK-RJZ. The Citation was made available for Sounds Air to use for jet charters and operated with the callsign SOUNDSAIR JULIET. The aircraft "ownership" (though in this case operatorship) returned to Tirohanga Holdings on 6 December 2019.

Sounds Air begin operated jet charter operations using the Citation on the 20th of December 2018 when ZK-RJZ operated Wellington-Taupo-Wanaka-Wellington.

Exciting Developments for Glenorchy Air

A big thanks to James Stokes, owner and managing director of Glenorchy Air.

Glenorchy Air's James Stokes

James writes,

Just though I would pass on a few images of the changes at Glenorchy Air since purchasing the business In July. The new Cessna 206 Stationair HD (ZK-JTK) made its maiden New Zealand flight today (12 December 2019) and will enter service as soon as it gets on our certificate. This replaces Cessna 172 ZK-RNX which was sold in August.

Glenorchy Air's new Cessna 206 Stationair HD ZK-JTK at Queenstown on 12 December 2019. The 206 has been purchased brand new from the Cessna factory in Wichita, Kansas and features the latest Garmin G1000 NXI glass cockpit avionics, comfortable leather seats, noise-cancelling headsets and many safety features, including airbags in the seat belts. The 206 has a 6-cylinder turbo-charged Lycoming engine, producing 310 horsepower at all altitudes, giving it an excellent rate of climb and a cruise speed of around 150 knots, making it ideal for our longer trips.
...and with Airvan ZK-LOR at Wanaka

GippsAero GA8 Airvans ZK-LOR and ZK-JRR have been repainted in new Kea livery for the 2029/20 summer, this was done by Daniel Frew at Mercer. Another Airvan will go next winter for a similar refurbishment

The two repainted Airvans, ZK-JRR and ZK-LOR at Wanaka on 12 December 2019

We have also placed an order for a new Cessna Grand Caravan EX which will join the fleet in April, replacing one of our other Airvans.

Glenorchy Air’s factory new Grand Caravan EX will be equipped with the G1000 NXI, the latest in integrated glass cockpit avionics. Our passengers will enjoy a 10-seater Executive interior with comfortable leather seats and window seats all around. The Grand Caravan EX has a Pratt and Whitney Canada PT6-140 Turboprop engine which produces 867 shaft horsepower, driving a 4-blade constant speed propeller, which will make it one of the quietest aeroplanes operating in Fiordland.

We have also expanded our Mount Cook options which was the main reason for purchasing the faster Cessna 206, allowing the Airvans to focus on Milford volume.

Air Auckland's New Whitianga Base

Air Auckland will base an aircraft and pilot full-time in Whitianga from just before Christmas to the end of March next year. The aircraft will primarily be available for sightseeing flights and to ferry passengers between Whitianga, Pauanui and Slipper Island. “We’ll see how it goes,” says Mike Foster, the Air Auckland chief pilot. “If the demand is there, the aircraft will stay in on the Coromandel longer. The Whitianga-based Cessna 172 won’t impact the airline’s daily scheduled service between Ardmore (south of Auckland) and Whitianga. The service is operated with either a Cessna 172 or Cessna 206 aircraft, depending on demand. The service arrives in Whitianga at 10:45am and departs back to Ardmore at 12:15pm. The 172 can carry three passengers and the 206 five. “We’ve started flying to Whitianga on a daily basis more than a year ago and it’s going really well,” says Mike. “Passengers embark or disembark at Ardmore at the DC3 hangar in Corsair Lane. There’s ample free parking and we have a shuttle service available that can collect or drop passengers off free of charge at the Papakura and Takanini train stations.” The Ardmore-Whitianga flight is timed to fit in with Sunair’s schedule to Great Barrier Island and Tauranga (currently flown on Fridays and Saturdays). Mike is excited about a recent arrangement entered into between Air Auckland and the owners of Slipper Island. “There are several guest chalets and a lodge on Slipper Island,” he says. “Guests often travel to the island from Pauanui by boat, but over summer the boat can be put to better use taking guests out on fishing charters, which is where we come into the picture. Flying from the Pauanui airstrip, the island is literally only a hop away. If the island isn’t fully booked out, it’s a great destination for day trips. The beach is beautiful. If people check with us beforehand, we’ll be able to tell them if we can fly them across for a few hours on that day.” Mike estimates that most sightseeing trips from Whitianga will take approximately 30 minutes. “We can cover quite a lot of ground in half an hour,” he says. “Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, Otama Beach, Opito Bay, there’s a lot to be seen.” A minimum of two passengers are required for sightseeing flights. Other Air Auckland products include charter flights and package deals on the Coromandel. The airline already has an arrangement with Pepper Tree Restaurant in place, flying passengers from Ardmore to Coromandel Town for lunch, and has recently launched deals with The Lost Spring in Whitianga and Mercury Bay Estate in Cooks Beach. A Whitianga fishing charter package is also under consideration. “Insofar as charter operations go, we’re happy to fly anyone anywhere on the North Island at a time that suits them best,” says Mike. “We’ll obviously need a few days’ notice to confirm a quote and make sure we have an aircraft available.” Air Auckland also operates to Great Barrier Island from Ardmore. “The Coromandel, and Whitianga especially, is an important part of our business and we hope to grow our services on the Peninsula significantly in the years to come,” says Mike.

10 years old

Today is 3rd Level New Zealand's 10th birthday...

Some 10 years ago someone asked me a question about a New Zealand airline and I couldn't remember the answer... it was this that led me to start this blog...

Can I take those who supported me in doing this blog from the beginning, especially Mike Condon, Bruce Gavin, Dave Paull. Many other people have sent me photos, information and tips offs. I am grateful to you all. A special thanks to the airline operators who have given me updates on their airlines. Today's news is tomorrow's history so thanks for helping preserve this aspect of NZ aviation history. And for those who have sent acknowledgements to me, a big thanks... I've almost pulled the plug a couple of times but here we are 10 years later

And looking back 10 years ago the first blog was about the unlikelihood of Air New Zealand offering more flights to Masterton as reposted below...

More Masterton Flights Unlikely

Source : http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/3150799/Eagle-call-unlikely-to-succeed

A call for more daily flights out of Masterton looks unlikely for now, Air New Zealand subsidiary Eagle Air says. The airline has been flying six days a week return from Masterton to Auckland since February. Bookings on the 19-seater have been "solid", but Masterton Mayor Garry Daniell wants to see a daily link to Christchurch added and a second, later return flight to Auckland. The current flight suited local business people, but made it difficult for others catching overseas flights, he said. More flights would also make it easier to book large parties for tourism activities. The solution was not simply putting on a bigger plane because the aerodrome could not handle it, Mr Daniell said. Destination Wairarapa chief executive Peter Wilson said the plane was often "packed" and had one of the highest loadings in the country. Apart from business people, the flight was being used by locals who would invite friends to fly in and then go to a show in Wellington, Mr Wilson said. But more seats would be a boon to the tourism sector, he said. "The great thing about that link is it does put us on the map quite literally, with Air New Zealand." Eagle Air general manager Carrie Hurihanganui said the call had been taken on board, but passenger loads and demand were "still settling".

More Fleet Changes

I just have noticed on the CAA register a couple of changes to the Air Auckland fleet...

Piper Navajo ZK-JGA is now registered to an IT company.

Added to the fleet is Cessna 172 ZK-EJU which many years ago used to operate flights between Auckland and Whitianga with Air Coromandel and the Mercury Bay Aero Club.

Farewell Mount Cook

Another little bit of history disappeared today with the cessation of the Mount Cook Airlines Air Operating Certificate.

As from the 10th of December 2019 the Mount Cook ATR 72 aircraft are operating under the Air NZ Air Operating Certificate.

The Mount Cook callsign will continue to be used in the meantime once a long term solution utilising alpha/numeric flight numbers which will see the use of ANZ and “New Zealand” deployed with the four digit 5xxx series for ATR72 flights.

White Island Eruption Causes Whakatāne Flight Cancellations

Following the White Island eruption and emergency operations from Whakatāne airport Air Chathams' Facebook page has announced flights 3C828 from Auckland to Whakatāne (departure 6:35pm, arriving 7:20pm) and 3C821 from Whakatāne to Auckland tomorrow morning (departure 6:45am, arriving 7:30am) have been cancelled due to ongoing emergency services operations at the Whakatāne Airport. Our customer service staff will be contacting the passengers involved now.

In Service #3

Today I had my first glimpse of Air Wanganui's new Beechcraft B200 King Air ZK-PMJ back in Hamilton for maintenance...  It entered service with an air ambulance flight to Christchurch on 18 November 2019 with Sam Lamb being the pilot of the first flight.

According to the Sounds Air website Pilatus PC12 ZK-PLB entered service today. PLB is Sounds Air's sixth PC12 and this morning it operated flight S8 651 from Blenheim to Christchurch and the return flight S8 652.
