Rawson Aviation - A Cook Strait Freight Flyer

On the 26th of March 1993 freight operator Fieldair Freight withdrew its three Douglas DC-3 freighters from Cook Strait services. 1993 also saw Rex Aviation sell its two Cessna 208 Caravan I aircraft which it had operated on behalf of Ansett Air Freight across Cook Strait and between Wellington and Christchurch. To fill this void E R (Buster) Rawson purchased one of the Caravans and formed Rawson Aviation Ltd. The Caravan, ZK-REY, was registered to Rawson Aviation, Auckland, on the 2nd of October 1993. Rawson Aviation was Wellington based and its major contract was to fly Ansett Air Freight cargo between Wellington, Blenheim, Nelson and Christchurch. In early 1995 Ansett Air Freight's operation, which operated a Fokker Friendship freighter, ended and this marked the end of the contract with Rawson Aviation. The Caravan, ZK-REY, was sold to Soundsair in May 1995.
