Sounds Air had been operating the Wellington-Westport routre since the 28th of April 2015. On that day the local brass band was there, the Lions put on a sausage sizzle and about 150 people gathered to check out the Pilatus PC-12 which positioned in from Wellington. The first service from Westport to Wellington was flown in Pilatus PC12 ZK-PLS as SDA 988 under the command of chief pilot Willie Sage.

When announcing the decision to withdraw its Westport service in October Sounds Air's CEO Andrew Crawford admitted to Stuff Travel it was a “sad day“. “We've been doing it now for nine years and really feel we've given Buller tremendous support and they admit that, but the economic climate is such that it's just not tenable. It’s depressing really.” The service had a “pretty reasonable” 65% capacity on flights. The aviation market is the toughest he has seen in his 21 years at the airline: “Post Covid, the combination of staggering jet fuel costs, a weak NZD exchange rate, increasing landing fees and CAA charges, wage pressures, high interest rates, and the dramatic international escalation in the costs of servicing engines have been crippling. This coupled with ongoing supply chain disruptions has been brutal for us, as it has been for Air New Zealand. We currently have two aircraft grounded awaiting parts, with no known delivery dates.” He also stressed a frustration with a lack of government support, having been encouraged to apply for funding through the Provincial Growth Fund and the Regional Infrastructure Fund, but had been rejected twice. Sounds Air confirmed it is dropping the route from December 31. “I don't have the time or the energy (to apply again). It's just (a) very, very long and painful process and I'm not doing it again. When you see the support that the national carrier has gotten over the years and (with) regional aviation, the regional operators are expected to mortgage their properties to support regional connectivity in this country. Frankly, I find it embarrassing.” But he added: “There's no shame in pulling out. I mean at some point you got to make business decisions and this is a decision.”

Sounds Air had been operating the Wellington-Taupō route since the 2nd of June 2015. On that day Pilatus PC12 ZK-PLZ positioned from Blenheim to Taupō early in the morning before operating SDA  803 to Wellington under the command of Sounds Air's Chief Pilot Willie Sage and Craig Anderson.

When announcing the decision to withdraw its Taupō service in November Sounds Air's CEO Andrew Crawford told Radio New Zealand, While demand for flights was strong, costs were too high. "Decisions like this are not taken lightly. This has been a very tough call for management and our shareholders," he said. "We have done everything that we can to avoid cancelling these services." Crawford said the company could not pass on massive fare increases or have shareholders subsidise services indefinitely." The Wellington to Taupō route was the last the company would can, Crawford said.

2024 - The NZ airline scene in review

On the 1st of January I made some predictions of what might be this year... you can read them here... https://3rdlevelnz.blogspot.com/2024/01/crystal-ball-gazing-for-2024.html

2024 proved an interesting year particularly with changes for our airfreight operators. Changes of types on various routes was a feature but at the end of the year some announcements were made which will feature in 2025. Here's what happened...

17 January 2024

Airwork's Boeing 737-400 ZK-TLK operated its last service. The aircraft's last flights were as AWK81 from Melbourne to Auckland departing Melbourne on the evening of Tuesday the 16th of January 2024 to arrive in Auckland in the early morning of the 17th of  January. The aircraft was cancelled from the register on the 2nd of May 2024 and has now joined the airframes the Auckland Airport Rescue Fire Service use on the other side of the runway.

7 February 2024

Texel Air's third Boeing 737-800 freighter for Australasian operations entered domestic service on the 1st of February 2024. Boeing 737-8FE ZK-TXC flew TNZ 73 to Christchurch and the return service, TNZ 74. It then operated another return flight to Christchurch in the early hours of the 2nd of February 2024 as TNZ 74 and TNZ 77.

20 February 2024

Air Chathams operated their final Metroliner services. The final freight flights were operated by ZK-CID on the 19th and 20th of February 2024 when it flew from the Chatham Islands to Wellington as 3C 212 and the return sector as 3C 221 (on the 19th) and then the final sector as 3C 212 on the 20th of February 2024, this flight being the final Metroliner revenue earning flight in New Zealand. It then positioned back to Auckland as 3C 934. It was later confirmed in media reports that ZK-CID's end with Air Chathams came somewhat earlier than expected. On the 19th of February a car load of drunken hoons smashed down a gate and destroyed runway lights. The group then drove up to the parked Metroliner and five people climbed on to its wings. The driver of the vehicle – a Toyota Hilux – decided to drive it under the wing while the others were on it but it was too tall and collided with the underside of the plane. Apparently the aircraft was certified to be flown back to Wellington and on to Auckland, being its final two sectors.

Sadly my trip home and visit to my home airport was marred by this ridiculous fence. It extends to beyond the old control tower and with the narrow gap between the wires means its impossible to get any photos when the Q300 taxis in. Hokitika has a rich history of the locals being interested in their airport and visiting aircraft to their airport. This is just a nonsense - OSH and security gone mad!

Greymouth on the 18th and 19th

After the Inchbonnie 90 celebrations on the 18th of December I drove through to Greymouth for a flight in the Fox Moth. There were also some other visitors. The one I am gutted to have missed was Lockheed L10 Electra ZK-AFD which did a fly by over Inchbonnie before I got there before visiting Hokitika and Greymouth.
