Christmas Expansion Update

 

In an email to their customers Originair has announced that based on customer feedback we’ll be enhancing our services to provide travellers with improved flight options effective 09 February 2026 including –

- New services on peak days between Nelson and Christchurch with peak day, peak time flights have been added on Fridays and Sundays for both full week trips and weekends away in Christchurch or Nelson. 

- Enhancing our Blenheim - Christchurch flight timings to give you more time in each destination and,

- Providing additional travel options between Blenheim and Wellington with what looks like four flights a week on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  1. $69 BHE-WLG is a sharp price, quite often Sounds have fares as low as $64. Much rather a J32 than a Caravan. 3 Airlines on the same regional route is a lot, although I guess Origin are only 3 days a week. I'd say its more about relocating aircraft to where they need to be.

It appears Originair are putting a tentative finger in the air (rather than toe in the water) on the BHE - WLG and NSN - CHC sectors to get a feel for whether a viable market exists for them on these routes. They already have ground handling sorted in WLG and CHC so can piggyback on this without having to put anything new in place. It would be surprising if Air NZ reacted to any extent but Soundsair may be more worried. Any increase in frequency of course comes with the added chance that the bear(s) has been poked.
