Back to the Future? Back to Tonga

Positioning up to Tonga from Auckland today as CVA431 was Air Chathams' Saab 340 ZK-CIZ.

There has been a bit of media speculation recently about the viability of Tonga's Lututai Airlines and there has been a few drums beating about Air Chathams restarting in Tonga. I don't usually post on rumour but the Chathams Pacific model was a winner for everyone. It's a reminder of the importance of sustaining viable regional air services.

  1. Would be interesting to see Chathams Pacific return but with what fleet?

  2. Their Twin Otter A3-KLT is in for heavy maintenance next month. CIZ is providing cover for this period as well as additional capacity.

A3-PUA, their Saab 340B+ had a mishap at Fua'amotu and still in an insurance dispute. Unserviceable.

Their Y12 A3-SPV is "in maintenance" and not flown for weeks/months.

  3. Go Air Chats!! If their New Zealand operation winds up at least the business will be able to survive in the Pacific.

    1. What on earth? The NZ operation won't wind up. And they certainly wouldn't survive in the Pacific alone. Without the NZ operation, there would never be a Chathams Pacific.

Chathams Pacific was NEVER a money maker. Did okay half the year. And then hemorrhaged money the other half.
