A Quick Stop at Whangarei

On my drive north to Kerikeri I made a 10 minute stop at Whangārei on 13 September 2025

It was interesting to see three Sunair Piper Aztecs all covered up as the airline's grounding continues... on the left ZK-FVP and on the right ZK-ECM with ZK-MTY in front of it

I was delighted to get Sunair's Cessna 172 ZK-DPN in its new scheme. It has been like this since mid-2024 but this was my first time seeing it.

Locally based Beech C90A King Air ZK-FDN

On duty for NZ Air Ambulance Service was Beech B200 Super King Air ZK-MFT. The aircraft is operated by Skyline Aviation

  1. Here is a challenge for you Steve.....

I find the world of air ambulance in New Zealand as a forgotten but critical part of our well, society as a whole.
Our kiwi "flying doctors" planes may not have the size and same glamour that the Royal flying doctors of Australia and operating out of some interesting locations out in the outback, or dealing with interesting time critical situations such as a highly venomous Taipan snake bite or a massive limb losing crocodile chomp...
But we do have a now growing medical aircraft sector and like mentioned, it plays such a critical part in our society.

This is where the challenging part really comes into it..
Unlike a few main providers in Australia. We have quite a spread out and diverse history of air ambulance services that are spread across multiple service providers past and present, such as Air2there or I believe airwork used to operate a few medical planes and I could imagine it would be a massive task.
But it would also be a great source of especially current medical air services providers and very interesting in seeing the history and seeing what the total numbers and providers of current medical air services.
Then its where to draw the line in the sand when taking in account.
The many Rescue helicopter services around the country.
I guess you could split the post into two and have a write up on the history of medical aviation history and just wrap it up on the second post all the current medical/resque providers and aircraft/helicopter types in a similar way you do the crystal ball gazing.
    But..
It would be a satisfying article mate. Even if it takes you the rest of the decade to research and compile.
