On airline duty at Tauranga

About to depart from Tauranga on  Sunday 19 June 2016 was Air Nelson's Bombardier Q300 ZK-NEF

and arriving was ZK-NEP in the new colour scheme... which scheme do you prefer?

Island Air flights to Motiti Island were being operated by both the Cessna 172 ZK-WGE see landing and Cessna 206 ZK-WWH seen departing. They both made two trips in the time I was there.

  1. Have no idea why Air Nelson never did an all black scheme on one Q300. The rest of the fleet members have one. (The lamented 1900D fleet had two)

    1. I read somewhere that Air Nelson is supposed to paint 2 Q300's all black

  2. I like the black and white scheme, and yes a couple of black Q300's would also be great

  3. I noticed that Air NZ is up to 8x daily (Wednesday to friday) on the AKL route! Is this a defensive move to block Jetstar?

    1. I think you right to stop them before they start.

    2. Yes i saw this in the latest schedule starting in November. I wonder if we can expect an announcement soon considering these flights start up soon?

Air NZ do cream this route, it is one of their most expensive routes in comparison to flight duration.

  4. I preferred the old scheme, mostly due to the nod to the airlines roots as TEAL (by then the last direct link back to the early days).

Plus it's nice to actually have some colour on the plane - all black and white gets a bit dull when we live in a technicolor world!

  5. I personal prefer the teal just because I think the Blue and green look great together and how these colours are iconic to Air NZ.I also miss How the Teal is slowly leaving our fleet. Yes having the Fern livery does look fresh and great on most aircraft but the Q300 doesn't suit it tbh. Also I do hope NEA does get full black livery because she's still in the full teal livery. If NEA NEH NEF got full black I would like it tbh. Why not. An B1900D X2 A320 X2 MVA 77W 789 all have one aircraft that received the full black

  6. Will the Pacific wave livery (THE LAST EVER TEAL LIVERY) out live all other liveries to become the longest standing colour sceme of all time for for Air New Zealand.?
With the 767 staying till next year and the busy 772 getting very little downtime for a repaint...
Teal is currently the longest serving. It went strong from 39/40-65.. 25-26 years possibly an extra year with the dc6s
The 742 sceme came close..? To be corrected of course by you guys of course..!? 83-01/02 when the 732 ZK-NAA and the metro was retired or possibly 06 when the last saabs left..? Were the last saabs all painted.? 19-(23 with the saabs)
    And the Pacific wave...
96-16 20 years and still counting.. with the 767 to be here at least till 18/19 and the 772..?
Side note... the simple pacific wave is rivaling my favorite.. the DC 10 livery
73-83... 10 years and the euro white teal 09- with two 767 and the remaining 773's still to be painted...
In the tail end we had the extremely boring black tails 2-3 years 12-14/15 and the shortest is the teal/air nz titles at 1 year 1965

  7. One wonders just how much further Air New Zealand could have gone with the Teal.? Thexcited pacific wave did look timeless and modern even through today on the 767s. Although did look bulky on the A320s and 733.
Does go a long way in advertising NZs fresh green and pure image.

  8. Whilst the Teal and Pacific Wave livery has been solid branding for TEAL/Air NZ for a long time and its sad to see them go, as the Pacific Wave brand was not meeting with Air NZ fleet renewal of modern aircraft especially with next generation of aircraft like the 789's and the new A320/A321 neo's.

The silver fern on black or black/white back ground livery, is about making a statement and apparently is going down well in the international market place as it turns heads in international destinations the airline flies to especially in Asia.

The Teal/Pacific liveries is about the romantic days of flying, like the old coral route service. With Air NZ creating more Asian destinations, flying to South America and additional destinations in the USA, the airline needed a 'in your face' branding, hence the the Silver Fern brand.

The question is, how long will the Silver Fern branding will last before it comes dated. The Teal/Pacific Wave branding last for nearly 45 years.

    1. Well they only singed a 5 year deal ti have the silver fern on the aircraft 2013-2018.So we could get a change very soon

And who exactly did they sign a five year deal with?

  9. Whilst the Pacific Wave was good for its time, its time has well and truly passed and it should be relegated to history books. The black and white current scheme on the B777 and B787 really does stand out when you see them at LAX, LHR, HKG or any other large international airports.

The "all black" B777 is in a class of its own. Walking through LAX when the "all black" B777 is parked at Tom Bradly terminal there is always people taking selfies with OKQ in the background!

    1. I agree.

Air NZ is the only airline that have 'all black' aircraft.

    1. The first 10(?) are in the Pacific Wave and the rest are in the Black scheme

    2. Would that aline the rumors of a few Q 300's being culled..?
It's going to be sad to see the last teal to disappear but in all honesty I just can't wait for air nz to have a common livery theme.. been so long now that they have had a mixed fleet.. going back to the simplified teal then the black tails and the current fern..
