Thanks to Neil who sent me this photo of the Ministry of Transport's Douglas DC-3 ZK-AXS over Paraparaumu... Now, for all the aviation history buffs, when do you think this photo was taken? It certainly is an early scheme and the airfield looks rather primitive.
Going by the houses in Avion Terrace (forward and below the nose of AXS in the picture, leading into the old perimeter road) I believe the photo would be back around the mid 1950's. This would tally with the fuselage cheat line in the days when it was green.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that... I'm away from home at present. I have later photos of AXS which I will post when I get home
ReplyDeleteZK-AXS c/n 32743 was purchased by The NZ Government on 30 Jun 1950 and put onto the NZ register on 21 Dec 1950 registered to the Civil Aviation Administration. So very early 1950’s would be my answer.
ReplyDeleteI understand the fuselage hulk served as a fire rescue training unit at Rongotai. I gather the rusty hulk there for many years was the AXS fuselage. I haven't seen it for many years, may be 20+. Was it scrapped or is it still lurking somewhere? Comments anyone?
