Every day Air New Zealand flies two Bombardier flights from Christchurch over the Alps to Hokitika. The national carrier has been operating the trans alpine service since late 1968 but the first Trans Alpine service began 5 years before when Phoenix Airways commenced a Greymouth-Christchurch service in September 1963.
