Thanks to Luke Rohloff who sent in a couple of photos taken at Palmerston North today of Ex-Air Chathams' Convair 580 ZK-CID getting ready to be trucked to the scrap metal yard. A cross with RIP CID is fittingly attached to the fuselage below the co-pilots window.
So what exactly was CID doing in PMR? It's been there for years!! Was it just a source of parts for CIB,E,F??
ReplyDeleteWas originally purchased from DHL in Bahrain, it was planned to be converted into a combi similar to CIB. When KSA was sold some parts were borrowed to make KSA suitable for Pioneers requirements. Before work could continue CIE and CIF came on sale along with the simulator and spares for a very good price that couldn't be missed. CIF and CIF were brought in and rebuilt using a few more of CID parts.
ReplyDeleteAfter all that Chats lacked the money to convert CID to a combi and had no use for a full freighter, so she remained until the day it was needed. Due to recent pressure by the airport authority it had to be scrapped. The aircraft was structurally very good and it was a real shame.
Wonder if they would let me have it? ;-)
ReplyDeleteWas the DHL registration HZ-SN11?
ReplyDeleteI believe so
