Mainland Air Service’s flights to Christchurch have been slow to take off, but have resulted in an approach by an Oamaru businessman for the company to fly direct to Wellington. Philip Kean, chief executive officer of Mainland Air Services, said he would have to conduct a feasibility study and would need a faster and bigger aeroplane for the longer flight. He said there were no immediate plans to action this idea. The Oamaru to Christchurch return service had a few forward bookings, mainly one or two passengers on flights and some concession bookings, he said. “You’ve got to give it time to get going. “When you start these things, they are always slow to get going, and it can be concerning. “Those people that are using the service are quite happy with it. “Most of our passengers carry on further to other destinations, like Auckland and Wellington, and are making their connections. “It’s working well.” He said in terms of marketing, the company was ‘keeping its name out there”. They plan to drop off flyers at motels and hotels in the near future.
