An airline operating between Oamaru and Christchurch will consider a Timaru service, but not yet. Mainland Air Service's new air service between Oamaru and Christchurch commenced two weeks ago and so far there have been quite a few enquiries from Oamaru and Timaru businesses. Mainland Air services general manager Shirley Kean said they were quite happy with their Oamaru to Christchurch service, but any flight from Timaru to Christchurch was still some time away. "We are currently concentrating on Oamaru and we are happy to get it up and running, keep it going and improving," Kean said. The airline had been approached by members of the Timaru business community in regards to getting a flight from Timaru to Christchurch. "We have been approached by several people . . . down the track, if there is a fairly big demand from Timaru, we will consider it, but we have to keep our other users in mind and they might not like to stop in Timaru." The service operates twice daily on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays with a return afternoon service on Sunday.
