On Whakatane Duties

Flying the morning flight from Auckland to Whakatane yesterday (28 January 2017) was Air Chathams' classic Douglas DC-3 ZK-AWP... Looks as if the weekly flight is getting popular... a leisurely flight to Whakatane on a Saturday morning, a stay overnight and return on Sunday afternoon.

Flying the afternoon service to Whakatane was Metroliner ZK-CID... For those that don't want to over night in Whakatane it is possible to fly down on the DC-3 and back on the Metroliner on the Saturday or vice versa on a Sunday

  1. Hi Steve. While you were staying overnight at Whakatane ZK-AWP was performing one of its seven weekends in Tauranga. After landing in Whakatane the crew refuel and head up to Tauranga where it stays ovenight before returning to Whakatane on Sunday afternoon to do the trip back to Auckland. This weekend it did 5 half hour scenic flights at $99.00 out of Tauranga and on the previous visit did six. The project is going very well with nearly 600 bookings (equal to nearly 22 full flights) with two more weekends (Waitangi and the one following) to go with seats still available. On Saturday AWP shared the skies with Catalina PBY and Harvard 96. The scene was quite impressive.
