Waitangi Day at Christchurch

China Southern's Bowing 787-8 B-2727 arrives into Christchurch on 6 February 2017... Why is it that China Southern, Emirates, Singapore and China Airlines can operate long haul services to Christchurch but Air New Zealand can't...

...and 600 series ZK-MVF

  1. Why can't Air NZ use Christchurch for flights to/from other Asian destinations, its cheaper for Air NZ to fly from Auckland plus they don't want to take traffic away from the Auckland hub. At present, they are leaving that to Singapore Airlines ex Christchurch. Things might change when they receive the remaining 3 B789's. They still have options on additional B787's.

    1. Agreed, the loads you can get from AKL for the same asset and therefore returns means it doesn't make sense to run unsustainable services from CHC.
Minimum loading on long haul tends to require at least 80%. The seasonal routes to Japan and Perth barely achieved this.
