Air Discovery's Piper Seneca which used to fly the NZ Herald from Rotorua to Gisborne. I think I am correct in saying it is only used for charter work now. Photo : M Condon

Very Interesting first picture. In 2007/2008 (not sure) The New Zealand Herald thought that it would be cheaper to drive the Herald to Gisborne instead of putting it on the truck to Rotorua then flying it to Gizzy. My Dad took over the job, driving it to Gisborne. He left Tauranga at 7pm in a Van and drive to the APN print depot in Auckland. He left the depot at midnight after he had loaded the Herald and drove down to Gisborne. After doing two drops in Matawai and Te Karaka he arrived in Gisborne at 5am. He then off loaded it to three vans who took it around town, up to Te Araroa and Ruatoria and south to Wairoa. Dad would then drive back to Tauranga arriving back at 8.30am. Dad ended up changing companies when the Herald run was given to Courier Post NZ in Tauranga. They lost a few vans, due to the drivers being fatigued. Now days, the run is run by two guys, one of which drives from Tauranga to Auckland and back. The other guy mets the Auckland driver and drives the herald to Gisborne and then back to Tauranga.
