The Last 10 Years - Dropped Ports and Routes

At the time of the blog's 10th anniversary Fraser Weir sent me an email reflecting on what has happened over the last 10 years. It's amazing how much how the domestic scene in New Zealand has changed.

These are the ports and routes Air New Zealand have dropped and the replacement services that grew out of these. There are some that still, in my opinion, have potential...

  1. Hi Steve,
Good post you could add others AKL to Norfolk taken over by Air Chathams.
Kiwi routes dropped but not yet taken up NSN-DUD, NSN-TRG and NSN-HLZ.
Probably others out there as well. The two towns with potential to get flights again are Masterton and Wanaka but still roadblocks in the way for this to happen unfortunately.

  2. I think there are a few gaps to be filled in the above Jarden...
I would like to see something like the following tried...

    OAM-WLG - S8
    WKA-CHC - NZ
    MRO-AKL - 3C
    PPQ-CHC - S8

    On your Kiwi Routes

NSN-TRG and NSN-HLZ might work but the fares would have to be right... OG is the obvious one but I think their fares would be too high

  3. Indeed Steve
Sounds Air would be too expensive to attract enough passengers to make it work for PPQ-CHC and OAM-WLG they only operate small aircraft so by that business model have to keep fares high. Origin would be good for all the routes from Nelson but need another Jetstream. Air Chathams could do both AKL-MRO and AKL-WKA with a Saab once runway works are completed.
